SquareUsUp lets a group track and split their shared expenses in a simple chart. If that’s what your group is looking for, great! But before we go on, let’s make sure SquareUsUp is the right solution for your group.

First, SquareUsUp is an Excel spreadsheet. If you don’t have Microsoft Excel installed on your computer, you can’t use SquareUsUp.

Second, many groups want their expense-sharing app to include a lot of bells and whistles. So let’s examine what SquareUsUp is not.

• SquareUsUp is not a communications tool. If you want your expense-sharing tool to facilitate communication between group members, look elsewhere.

• SquareUsUp is not an electronic payment app. If you want your expense-sharing tool to tie into online financial tools to help you pay bills or send money to group members, look elsewhere.

• SquareUsUp is not a currency converter. If you want your expense-sharing tool to perform international currency conversions, look elsewhere.

• SquareUsUp is not a receipt scanner. If you want your expense-sharing tool to read scanned receipts to record expenses, look elsewhere.

• SquareUsUp is not personal finance software. If you want your expense-sharing tool to manage your money, help you budget yourself, or analyze your finances, look elsewhere.

• SquareUsUp is not designed for use on cellphones. Cellphones are not an optimal platform for spreadsheets, so if you want an expense-sharing tool that lets you use your phone to record financial transactions as you make them, you should probably look elsewhere.

Nothing. Nada. Zero. It’s totally free. SquareUsUp was developed by a software engineer who plays tennis in a group that was unsatisfied with every expense-sharing solution they found. The solutions from the big players in this field were gross overkill, while the homegrown spreadsheets were all awkward to use and just didn’t have all required functionality. How do I get started?

First, make sure you have genuine Microsoft Excel installed on your computer – preferably running on Microsoft Windows. Then just download the SquareUsUp template file per the instructions on the Downloads page, open the file in Excel, create a new project, and start using your project.
